There is one word that the Swedish language has in common with Japanese: koja (in Japanese koya or 小屋). A koja is a small hut that we associate with childhood and playfulness. It is a tradition for children in the Swedish countryside to build these small shelters together with their friends. They are places that enable imagination and play. But equally important to these spaces in themselves, is the ritual of building them. As we look to Tokyo to design a meditative space in a stressful urban environment, we wish to work with our own associations while implementing our understanding of similar traditions in Japan.
